Protected Bike Lanes: Long Beach Has Them, Los Angeles Is About To Create One
Protected bike lanes put a physical barrier, such as curbs, planters, or some other barrier, between moving cars and bicyclists. In 2011, the City of Long Beach unveiled the first protected bike lane in California. Four years later, the City of Los Angeles is introducing its first protected bike lane on Reseda Boulevard from Plummer Street to Parthenia Street. Unfortunately, Orange County does not have a protected bike lane yet.
Santa Ana is one of the most bike-supportive cities in Orange County. In 2014, my Santa Ana Planning Commission colleagues and I recommended to the Santa Ana City Council that the Harbor Boulevard Mixed Use Transit Corridor Plan implement protected bike lanes along Harbor Boulevard. In 2009, I worked with staff to create progressive bike parking standards that the Santa Ana City Council unanimously adopted.
It is natural for Santa Ana to be the first city in Orange County to implement protected bike lanes. In the meantime, to read more about Los Angeles’ first protected bike lane, please click here.
