Here is more on the fire at the Gem Theater from the OC Register – A smoky fire erupted in the backstage area of the Gem Theater near Garden Grove’s historical downtown and civic center around dawn Monday, but it was quickly doused.

The blaze did not affect the seating or stage area, nor did it have any impact on the nearby Strawberry Festival, officials said.

The fire broke out at 5:39 a.m. in an upstairs costume room, Battalion Chief Jeff Spargur said. Firefighters arrived to see smoke coming from the door. They broke in and began putting out the fire.

Spargur said the fire caused between $200,000 and $500,000 damage to the theater. The costume area will require a new roof, drywall and paint, plus repair due to smoke damage. There is also a smoky smell in the auditorium.
