Garden Grove’s community garden opens Saturday, Nov. 21

November 21, 2009

From the Orange County Register – The City of Garden Grove has picked 39 winners who can start digging and planting as early as Saturday in what will be Garden Grove’s first community garden.

A formal opening has been set for 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Pilar Alcivar-McCoy, Recreation and Human Services manager for the city, said so far, 20 winners have paid their rent for the plot and signed papers.

“We have 10 more who are on a waiting list,” she said. “If we don’t hear from the others, the plots will be awarded to those on the waiting list.”

The city offered the 10-by-10-foot plots at the northeast corner of Eighth Street and Garden Grove Boulevard based on a lottery system. The volunteer-run garden will hold the plots for individuals or groups at $45 in rent annually for each plot.

The city started the program to give residents an opportunity to organically grow their own food – vegetables, herbs, flowers or fruits.

Winners were notified earlier this week. For more information, please call: 714-741-5207.
